The Challenge

The company's previous website, originally built over 20 years ago, was running on an outdated platform. Their goal was to transition to a modern, stable platform that would better support their business growth and adaptability.

Operating within the highly regulated tobacco industry, the new website needed to address a range of industry-specific requirements. These included managing shipping restrictions based on both product type and destination, as well as implementing robust age verification processes. The site also had to accommodate various shipping methods that fluctuate depending on the order content.

In addition to compliance, the new website needed to offer tools to effectively manage promotional campaigns and maintain a strong SEO presence to support their online visibility.

Approach

The client sought to upgrade their existing website to a modern, more stable platform that would not only enhance performance but also improve the overall user experience, particularly on mobile devices.

Given the increasing popularity of online stores, the new website needed to be fully responsive and user-friendly across various platforms and devices. The design should follow a lightweight, modern aesthetic to ensure a visually appealing and intuitive experience for end-users, making it easier to navigate and shop.

The project leveraged Adobe Commerce's native features, combined with Binary Anvil's custom modules, to create an intuitive and manageable system. This solution also enhanced Famous Smoke Shop's online marketing capabilities, giving them a powerful platform for growth and customer engagement.

Custom features were implemented to meet Famous Smoke Shop's complex shipping requirements, including first-order restrictions, international shipping constraints, product attribute-based restrictions, age verification, signature-required deliveries, and the management of customer documents/ID for validation purposes.

Several custom modules and integrations were developed to extend Adobe Commerce's functionality, addressing various operational needs such as customer support, loyalty programs, coupon management, and more. This robust set of tools ensured a seamless experience for both the business and its customers.

What We Did

01 REBUILD USING ADOBE COMMERCE

The website was completely redesigned and rebuilt on the Adobe Commerce platform, ensuring a robust and scalable foundation. We assessed the current business as it is and developed new features in Adobe Commerce to uphold and enhance their business requirements. Additionally, we incorporated new features to align with the client's evolving business needs.

02 RESPONSIVE WEB DESIGN (RWD)

We overhauled the website's design to better reflect the brand's identity and improve overall user experience. By adopting a responsive web design (RWD) approach, the website now delivers consistent usability across all devices, including desktops, tablets, and mobile phones, ensuring a seamless experience for users on any platform.

03 ACCOUNT CREATION WITH AGE VERIFICATION

We integrated a real-time age verification process through the third-party service Veratad to ensure customers legal age compliance to purchase regulated items. This integration allows to configure different verification rule sets including shipping addresses, DOB, and many more.

04 SHIPPING RESTRICTIONS MODULE

A sophisticated rule engine was developed to dynamically enforce shipping restrictions on checkout. The system checks for user-defined rules in the Adobe Commerce admin that can be based on conditions such as geographic destination of the cart content and product attributes, preventing customers from shipping products matching the conditions set to restricted areas. All shipping restrictions are easily managed within the Adobe Commerce admin panel, empowering the business with full control.

05 FIRST ORDER RESTRICTION

We implemented custom logic on the checkout page that requires first-time international customers (outside the U.S. and Canada) to have matching billing and shipping addresses. This restriction helps ensure secure transactions and reduces the potential for fraud.

06 DYNAMIC COUPON CODE LINK GENERATION

Custom functionality was developed to generate dynamic coupon codes using Adobe Commerce's cart price rule feature. These codes can be applied not only through links but also via landing pages, banners, and even their ESP campaigns. When clicked, coupons automatically apply to the customer's sessions on the Famous Smoke Shop's website. These coupons can easily be distributed for promotions, making marketing campaigns easier and resulting in higher sales.

07 SHOP BY BRANDS WITH SUB-BRANDS

A comprehensive "Shop by Brands" module was implemented, allowing customers to browse products by brand and sub-brand. This feature includes dedicated pages for each brand and sub-brand, improving navigation. The admin system provides an intuitive interface to manage brands and sub-brands, making it easy to add, edit, and associate products with them.

08 ENHANCED PRODUCT COMPARISON USER INTERFACE

A custom product comparison block was added to the category and search result pages. This feature allows customers to easily compare products, displaying key information such as product images, names, and the option to remove items from the comparison list. Products are grouped by type to keep comparisons organized and user-friendly.

09 ENHANCED PRODUCT DETAILS PAGE DESIGN

We created a tailored product details page (PDP) with features based on Famous Smoke Shop's specifications. Key elements include:

  • A dedicated list of assortment components when the product is a sampler package
  • Dynamic discount percentage display and expiration dates for ongoing promotions
  • Dynamic "Free Shipping" icon for eligible products

10 DISCONTINUED PRODUCTS

A feature was created to allow store admins to mark products as discontinued when these items are not going to return to stock, allowing them to maintain SEO presence. These items remain visible on the storefront but are labeled as discontinued and become non-sellable, presenting alternative items from the same product family when customers reach the PDP and are unable to purchase them.

11 PRODUCT FLAGS

We developed a custom management system in Adobe Commerce, enabling Famous Smoke Shop to tag products with special flags (e.g., New, Bestseller) to enhance their visibility and marketability. These flags help highlight key products and drive customer engagement.
